In a landmark move for global environmental innovation, Prince William has announced that Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will be the host city for the 2025 Earthshot Prize awards. This marks the first time the prestigious event will be held in South America — a recognition of Brazil's rich biodiversity and critical role in solving the world’s climate challenges.

Launched in 2020 by Prince William and Sir David Attenborough, the Earthshot Prize is a global initiative that awards £1 million each to five winners whose innovative ideas help tackle the planet’s most pressing environmental issues. The five Earthshot categories are:

Brazil is home to over 60% of the Amazon rainforest and nearly 20% of the world’s biodiversity. Choosing Rio as the 2025 host highlights the importance of South America in the global climate effort and puts a spotlight on innovative local conservation and sustainability projects.
The ceremony will also align with COP30, which Brazil is hosting in 2025 — creating a powerful, synergistic platform for policymakers, innovators and environmental advocates to come together.
