In Case You Forgot... Today is Valentine's Day! ❤️

That’s right! If you’re reading this on 14 February, consider this your last-minute reminder to grab some flowers, chocolates, or at least send a heartfelt text. Valentine’s Day isn’t just another day on the calendar—it’s a celebration of love, romance, and all things sentimental.

But here’s another way to think about it… Instead of celebrating love just today, why not use it as inspiration to finally plan that dream trip you’ve been putting off? Whether it’s a romantic getaway, a bucket-list solo adventure, or a trip with friends, what better time than today to start making it happen?

So, whether you’re spending the day with a special someone, celebrating your independence, or enjoying discounted chocolates tomorrow, let’s look at how Valentine’s Day is marked around the world—and why it might be the perfect time to start planning your next adventure.

How Different Countries Celebrate Valentine's Day 💖

Japan: Unlike Australia, where both partners exchange gifts, Japan has a unique tradition. On 14 February, women give chocolates to men—either "giri choco" (obligation chocolate for friends and colleagues) or "honmei choco" (true love chocolate for romantic partners). A month later, on 14 March, known as White Day, men return the favour by giving gifts, often sweets or jewellery.

South Korea: They take it a step further. In addition to Valentine’s Day and White Day, 14 April is Black Day, when single people who didn’t receive any gifts gather to eat jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and commiserate—or celebrate—their singlehood.

France: Often called the "most romantic country in the world," France is famous for extravagant Valentine's Day celebrations. Historically, France had a now-banned tradition called “loterie d’amour” (love lottery), where men and women were randomly paired as couples! These days, Paris and other cities are filled with candlelit dinners, love letters, and, of course, breathtaking views.

Denmark & Norway: Rather than gifting chocolates or roses, Gaekkebrev is the tradition here—men anonymously send humorous poems or love letters to women, who must guess the sender. If they guess correctly, they get an Easter egg later in the year!

The Philippines: It’s not just about chocolates and roses—mass weddings are a major event on Valentine’s Day. Thousands of couples tie the knot in group ceremonies, often sponsored by the government.

What About Singles on Valentine’s Day? 🚫💑

Not everyone is coupled up on 14 February, and that’s perfectly fine! In fact, being single on Valentine's Day has become a celebration in itself. Here’s how singles around the world make the most of the day:

Galentine’s Day (or Broentine’s Day!): Originally popularised by the TV show Parks and Recreation, this is a day to celebrate friendships. Whether it’s a night out, a movie marathon, or a fancy dinner with friends, Galentine’s (or Broentine’s) is all about self-love and appreciation.

Solo Pampering: Many people use Valentine’s Day as a reason to indulge in self-care—think spa days, fancy dinners for one, or even treating yourself to that gift you've been eyeing.

Random Acts of Kindness: Some take the day as an opportunity to spread love in a different way—volunteering, sending notes of appreciation to family and friends, or even buying flowers for strangers.

Anti-Valentine’s Day Parties: Some singles celebrate their independence with themed parties that mock the overly romantic traditions of the day—burning photos of exes, playing break-up anthems, and just having a good laugh.

Why Not Celebrate With a Trip? ✈️

Valentine’s Day is all about love, so why not celebrate by doing something you love—travelling! Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a solo adventure, or an exciting trip with friends, today is the perfect day to start planning.

Always wanted to visit Paris, the City of Love? Maybe it’s time to start looking at flights.

Dreaming of a tropical escape to Bali or Fiji? Now’s a great time to book that trip.

Craving a solo adventure through Europe, Japan, or South America? Make 2025 the year you finally go!

Travel is one of the best ways to celebrate yourself. You don’t need a partner to explore the world—you just need the desire to go.

However You Celebrate, Make It a Day of Love 💖

Whether you’re in a relationship, happily single, or somewhere in between, Valentine's Day is ultimately about celebrating love—romantic, platonic, or self-love. So, however you spend today, make sure it’s filled with kindness, joy, and maybe a little bit of chocolate! 🍫

And if you’ve been putting off that dream trip, let today be the push you need to start planning it!
